The Right Galvanised Steel Tube for the Right Application
Not every application demands the extreme corrosion performance of MAGNAtube®. Many do not. What they do demand is a pre-galvanised steel tube that arrives to consistent specification, carries a uniform zinc coating across every length, presents a clean and commercially acceptable surface finish, and comes from a manufacturer who controls the process from raw coil to finished tube.
That is exactly what our pre-galvanised ERW steel tube delivers. Manufactured in-house at our 14,000 square metre facility in Wednesbury, West Midlands, our pre-galvanised tube is produced from zinc-coated steel coil fed directly through our ERW tube mills. The zinc coating is applied to the steel strip before tube forming takes place, giving you a product with a consistently bright, uniform finish and reliable corrosion resistance across indoor, semi-exposed, and mildly demanding outdoor applications.
Pre-galvanised steel tube sits in a practical and well-established position in the galvanised tube market: better corrosion protection than uncoated mild steel, a superior surface appearance to hot-dip galvanised tube, and a cost profile that suits volume production across a wide range of industries.

Pre-Galvanised Steel Tube vs Hot-Dip Galvanised
The two most common forms of galvanised steel tube in the UK market serve different purposes, and choosing between them is a specification decision rather than simply a cost one. Here is how they compare in the areas that matter most to procurement managers and design engineers.
| Feature | Pre-Galvanised ERW Tube | Hot-dip Galvanised ERW Tube |
| When galvanising is applied | Before tube forming, at the coil stage | After tube forming, the finished product |
| Zinc coating thickness | Typically 20 to 30 microns | Typically 50 to 80 microns |
| Surface finish | Uniform, bright, consistent | Variable, spangle pattern |
| Interior tube protection | Partial | Full, including interior surfaces |
| Weld seam coverage | Managed at manufacture | Complete coverage via full immersion |
| Best environment | Indoor, semi-exposed, mild outdoor | Outdoor, structural, heavy-duty |
| Formability after coating | Good | Not recommended |
| Typical applications | Furniture, HVAC, automotive, display | Construction, agriculture, infrastructure |
The table above is a guide, not a rule. The correct specification always depends on the specific environment, the application, and the service life required. If you are unsure which galvanised steel tube is right for your project, our team will give you a straight answer.
How Pre-Galvanised Steel Tube Is Manufactured
Pre-galvanising is performed at the coil stage, before the steel is formed into tube. The steel strip passes through a zinc bath while still in sheet form, producing a consistent, uniform zinc coating across both faces of the material. That coated coil is then fed into our ERW tube mills, where it is cold-formed and resistance welded into the finished tube profile.
Because the galvanising happens before forming, the coating is applied under controlled, continuous mill conditions rather than as a post-fabrication dip. This produces a surface finish that is brighter and more dimensionally consistent than hot-dip galvanised tube, with tighter coating uniformity across both flat faces and curved profiles.
The zinc coating on pre-galvanised steel tube acts as a protective barrier, isolating the steel from the moisture, oxygen, and airborne contaminants that drive corrosion. In addition, zinc is electrochemically more active than steel, meaning that even where the coating is lightly scratched or marked during handling, the zinc will corrode preferentially, continuing to protect the steel beneath.
Weld Seam Integrity
The weld seam in an ERW tube is formed after the coated coil has been shaped, which means the welding process disrupts the zinc layer at the seam. This is a known characteristic of pre-galvanised ERW tube, and it is managed as part of our manufacturing process. Our production controls address the weld zone to maintain the protection integrity of the finished tube, and every length is inspected before leaving our facility.
For applications where full interior and exterior weld seam protection is a primary requirement, our hot-dip galvanised steel tube or MAGNAtube® is the appropriate specification. Our team is straightforward about which product is right for which application, and we will always point you towards the correct solution rather than the convenient one.
Pre-Galvanised Steel Tube Applications
Pre-galvanised ERW steel tube is one of the most widely used tube materials in UK manufacturing, valued for the combination of corrosion protection, surface quality, and processing flexibility it brings to a broad range of applications.
Automotive
Pre-galvanised ERW tube is used extensively in automotive component manufacturing, body structure supports, and ancillary systems where a clean, consistent surface finish is required as a base for further processing. Its dimensional consistency and uniform coating make it well-suited to high-volume manufacturing environments where tolerance repeatability matters.
Furniture and Interior Fitout
The clean, bright surface finish of pre-galvanised steel tube makes it a natural choice for furniture frames, display systems, shelving structures, and retail fitout where the tube surface is visible or forms part of the finished aesthetic. It accepts paint, powder coat, and other surface treatments without the preparation challenges associated with a heavier galvanised finish.
Construction
Pre-galvanised steel tube is used across a range of light structural and construction applications where a galvanised finish is required and the operating environment falls within the mild to moderate corrosion category. For heavy structural, outdoor, or high-corrosion environments, our hot-dip galvanised tube is the more appropriate specification.
HVAC, Ducting, and Ventilation
The corrosion resistance and clean internal surface of pre-galvanised steel tube make it suitable for use in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, particularly in semi-exposed or internal environments where moisture resistance is a requirement but extreme external exposure is not.
Plumbing and Fluid Systems
Pre-galvanised steel tube is used in a range of plumbing and heating system applications, particularly where the tube will operate in controlled indoor environments. Its zinc coating provides reliable protection in conditions where exposure to moisture is consistent but not aggressive.
Racking and Materials Handling
The strength, consistency, and surface quality of pre-galvanised ERW tube make it a standard specification in industrial racking systems, storage structures, and materials handling equipment, applications where high-volume production, tight dimensional tolerances, and a presentable finish are all requirements simultaneously.

In-House Manufacture, End-to-End Quality Control
Our pre-galvanised steel tube is manufactured entirely in-house at our Wednesbury facility. We slit our own coil on our Durmech 1520mm slitting line, feed it directly into our ERW tube mills, and produce finished tube against a BS EN ISO 9001:2015 certified quality management system, UKAS accredited. Every length carries full material traceability from raw steel coil to finished product.
Our quality policy applies without exception to every tube type we produce, including pre-galvanised. If a single seam cracks during a tube test, the entire batch is discarded and restarted. We do not selectively apply quality standards. Every production run is tested for tensile strength, elongation, and yield; flattening and weld integrity; and non-destructive weld inspection. The tube that leaves our facility meets specification. That is not an aspiration. It is our operating standard.
Structural tube is manufactured to EN 10219-1:2006 and EN 10219-2:2019, with our environmental management system certified to BS EN ISO 14001:2015, also UKAS accredited.
