Transport Management

At Top Tubes, our commitment to efficiency and excellence extends across every department, including transport and logistics. Since joining us in September 2021, John Bate has played a pivotal role in transforming our transport operations, ensuring our fleet runs smoothly, safely, and cost-effectively.

A Wealth of Experience in Transport Management

John brings over 21 years of experience in transport and logistics, with 15 years in the recycling industry before joining Top Tubes. Having started his career as a driver, he steadily progressed through the ranks, becoming a supervisor and later a transport manager—a role he has held for 14 years. His extensive background, coupled with his International Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (DCPC), has equipped him with the skills and expertise to lead our transport division with confidence.

Fleet Optimisation – Efficiency at the Forefront

When John joined Top Tubes, one of his key priorities was improving fleet efficiency. He identified that the existing fleet was not being managed as effectively as it could be, leading to unnecessary costs and operational inefficiencies.

  • Encouraging Driver Involvement – By actively engaging drivers in decision-making, he fostered a more inclusive work environment.
  • Fleet Reduction & Performance Enhancement – By streamlining vehicle numbers and optimising driver allocation, John improved overall efficiency without compromising service quality.
  • Brand Consistency – He implemented uniform livery across all trucks, aligning them with Top Tubes’ brand identity for a professional and cohesive appearance.

Enhancing Driver Morale and Safety

A strong, motivated team is essential to maintaining a high-performing transport department. John recognised early on that driver morale needed improvement and took action by:

  • Encouraging Driver Involvement
By actively engaging drivers in decision-making, he fostered a more inclusive work environment.
  • Implementing On-Site Cleaning
Previously, truck maintenance was inconsistent, with drivers responsible for cleaning their own vehicles. John introduced a
structured on-site cleaning system every two weeks, significantly boosting driver morale and reducing DVSA stops.
  • Tachograph Compliance Overhaul
When John joined, there were a high number of tachograph infringements. He enforced a stricter monitoring system, ensuring compliance through regular oversight and sanctions for violations. This initiative contributed to Top Tubes achieving a Green DVSA rating.

Expanding the Fleet and Future Plans

Under John’s leadership,
Top Tubes’ fleet now comprises 13 vehicles, including:

  • 4 Arctic Trucks
  • 9 Rigids

As well as:

  • 6 Trailers
  • 10 Drivers

Looking ahead, John aims to:

  • Expand the fleet to meet growing demand
  • Further improve driver and vehicle safety
  • Continue refining operational efficiencies
  • Enhance his own industry knowledge to drive innovation in transport management

New Additon To The Fleet

The latest addition to the fleet is a flagship Volvo FM, featuring an 11L 380bhp engine and an 8-wheel, 9-metre bed, capable of transporting multiple loads simultaneously. This investment strengthens our ability to manage both outgoing deliveries and inbound material collections from the docks.

A Strong Focus on Compliance and Record-Keeping

John runs Top Tubes' transport operations as if it were a UK National Business, despite working under a restricted UK goods licence. He holds the department to high standards, ensuring strict compliance beyond what is required. His improvements in record-keeping and operational oversight have reinforced safety, efficiency, and regulatory adherence.

Cost and Efficiency Savings

John has also introduced significant cost-saving measures that have directly benefited both the company and its customers:

  • On-Site AdBlue Supply
Previously, drivers were responsible for sourcing their own AdBlue, leading to inefficiencies. By stocking AdBlue on-site, Top Tubes has cut costs and improved refuelling efficiency.
  • Optimised Route Planning
Deliveries are planned strategically, covering regions as far north as Newcastle, as far south as Devon and Kent, and extending across Norfolk, Wales, and the North West.
  • Early Morning Dispatch
To meet tight deadlines, deliveries leave the Top Tubes site between 2-3 AM, ensuring customers receive their orders promptly.

Commitment to Training & Development

John is passionate about continuous training and upskilling within his team. Key training initiatives include:

  • CPC & DCPC Certification – Ensuring all drivers complete 35-40 hours of training over five years.
  • Weekend Courses – Covering areas such as working at height and customer service.
  • Mentoring & Apprenticeships – John has recently taken on an apprentice, helping to nurture the next generation of skilled transport professionals.
